Through the generosity of the SEF (Somerville Education Foundation) and the BEF (Branchburg Education Foundation), we have added a Makerspace to our media center. A Makerspace is a creative community workspace where our students build and experiment with technology, art, and craft projects while sharing tools and ideas with other students and staff members. Makerspaces allow innovation to take place, because learners can engage in playful information-based spaces which allows them to explore, construct, and invent new things.
Creating a Makerspace in our media center has represented a unique means for our high school students to explore. It has provided a community space for invention and skill sharing that supports growth and lifelong learning in a way that goes beyond reading.
Our Makerspace project provides resources to encourage teens to see the value of education through hands-on engagement, and our students are able to pursue hobbies and collaborate on school projects in a whole new way. It is a place where the design-based learning theory, taught in our STEM classes, can come to life.
